The book of Dao

(The book of the way of virtue)

Part 6.

部分.

46.
Peaceful modesty

Wheresoever the Dao reigns;
The racehorses are called back,
To help fertilize the fields.
Wheresoever the Dao does not rule;
War horses are already waiting beforehand,
At the border.
Crimes,
There are none greater than,
Knowing what you want.
Disasters,
There are none greater than,
Not knowing when enough is enough.
Mischief,
There is none greater than,
The desire for profit.
Knowing when enough is enough,
Verily and truly is enough.
禍莫大於不知足;

47.
To see and to understand

Understanding the world,
Without leaving the house.
To see the heavenly Dao,
Without looking out the window.
The more you stray far away,
The more you give up deeper knowing.
Wise men do not have to travel far,
To know.
Can recognize the unseen.
Bring it to a successful conclusion,
Without acting.
不出戶知天下;

48.
Less is more

Committing to study,
Is piling up daily.
Dedication to the Dao,
Is letting go daily.
Release,
To let go even more.
To get to,
The doing of doing nothing.
A doing of nothing that,
Leaves nothing undone.
Try to conquer the world,
Without interfering in all kinds of things.
To try to conquer the world,
By mingling in all kinds of things,
Is a work without end.

49.
Trust and goodness

The wise have no heart's desire,
And therefore, help others with theirs.
Charitable people love me,
Non-charitable people love me too.
There is so much goodness to be had.
Authentic people trust me,
Inauthentic people also trust me.
There is so much confidence to be gained.
Wise people live on Earth,
Quietly and discreetly
With an ever-floating heart.
Others have no choice but to,
To keep an eye on each other,
And set their ears to them,
Looking like children.
吾善之;
吾亦善之;
德善。
信者,
吾信之;
吾亦信之;

50.
Life and death

Throw yourself into life,
Return to the end of it.
Three out of ten,
Are followers of life.
Three out of ten,
Are followers of death.
Another three out of ten
Live to die.
But why?
They live for life's surpluses.
I have heard of,
The protectors of life,
Who travel across the land,
Like buffalo or tigers,
And cross battlefields just like that,
Without sword or shield.
Like buffaloes without a chance to lift their
horns,
Like tigers with no chance to grab their claws,
Like swords without a sheath to hide.
Why?
Because they have no chance of dying,
By mortality.
十有三;
十有三;
入軍不被甲兵;

51.
The power of the way

Created by the Dao,
Strengthened by inner power,
Shaped into being,
Perfected by circumstances.
Therefore, there is none among all beings
Who does not honor the Dao,
And does not appreciate its inner power.
Honoring the Dao,
Appreciating inner strength,
On behalf of no one,
And yet in constant naturalness.
Therefore, Dao creates them,
Inner strength strengthens them,
Raises them and ripens them,
Give them shelter and cares for them,
Nurses them and protects them.
To produce, but without owning it.
To do, but without claiming it.
To lead, but without dominating.
This is known as:
Elusive deep soundness.
德畜之;
長之育之;
亭之毒之;

52.
the sensation of feeling

The world started somewhere.
This is known as the mother.
Once you can grasp the mother,
Then you can understand the child.
When you have understood the child,
Be safe in the mother,
And for the rest of your life
Remain beyond danger.
Stuff the holes.
Slam the doors.
Your life is,
No longer a burden.
Open your mouth.
Force all kinds of things.
Your life remains,
Inept.
Noticing the little things,
That speaks of enlightenment.
Leaving weaknesses for what they are,
That speaks of power.
Use this light to get back home,
In lighting.
Do this without losing yourself in,
Worries, burdens, and disasters.
Over and over again,
This is the way.
無遺身殃;

53.
To move forward or stray

Even if I had a tiny bit of knowledge,
I would already be walking the Road,
And my only fear would be to stray.
The Great Way is so supple and smooth,
Still people like to wander.
Palaces shining beautiful,
Yet the meadows grow full of weeds.
And granaries grow empty.
Clothes displaying colorful embroidery,
Belts leaving room for sharp swords,
Stuffing themselves with food and drink,
Money and merchandise galore.
This is known as “thief’s urges”,
And has absolutely nothing to do with the Dao.
倉甚虛;
財貨有餘;

54.
Maturation

What is well-rooted does not get pulled out so
quickly.
What is securely attached does not get removed
so quickly.
Therefore, keep honoring the ancestors.
Grow within yourself,
Then inner strength grows,
Into authenticity.
Grow it in your household,
Then the inner strength grows,
Into abundance.
Grow it in your community,
Then the inner strength grows,
Into longevity.
Grow it all over the country,
Then the inner strength grows,
Into prosperity.
Grow it over all that covers the sky,
Then the inner strength grows,
Into the universal.
Therefore, measure yourself by yourself.
Measure your household based on your
household.
Measure your community by your community.
Measure the whole country by the whole
country.
Measure everything that covers the sky by
everything that covers the sky.
How do I see the world as such?
Thusly!
其德乃真;
其德乃餘;
其德乃長;
其德乃豐;
