N°6: The Sage
६. पण्डितवर्गः षष्ठः
☸️
Someone who criticizes you as if they were telling you about a hidden treasure, follow that person. The sage shows you the dangers of life. Follow and you will see the good and not the bad.
निधीनामिव प्रवक्तारं यं पश्येत् वर्ज्यदर्शिनाम् ।
निगृह्यवादिनं मेधाविनं तादृशं पण्डितं भजेत् ।
तादृशं भजमानस्य श्रेयो भवति न पापीयः ॥ १॥

Let the sage criticize you, let the wise give instruction, let the sage limit what is wrong. People with good hearts love the sage; people with bad hearts immediately hate the sage.
अववदेदनुशिष्यात् असभ्याच्च निवारयेत् ।
सतां हि स प्रियो भवति असतां भवत्यप्रियः ॥ २॥

Do not befriend people with an ugly soul; don't deal with bad souls. Keep friends with people who nurture beauty in their souls; deal with good souls.
न भजेत् पापकानि मित्राणि न भजेत् पुरुषाधमान् ।
भजेत् मित्राणि कल्याणानि भजेत पुरुषनुत्तमान् ॥ ३॥

Drink the water of truth and rest in joyful peace with a serene mind. The wise fulfill their desire with the DHAMMA, revealed by the Greats.
धर्मपीतीः सुखं शेते विप्रसन्नेन चेतसा ।
आर्यप्रवेदिते धर्मे सदा रमते पण्डितः ॥ ४॥

Those who dig canals control the water; the makers of arrows straightens his arrows themselves; carpenters work the wood to their hand. The wise control their thoughts, their minds.
उदकं हि नयन्ति नेतृका इषुकारा नमयन्ति तेजनम् ।
दारुं नमयन्ति तक्षका आत्मानं दमयन्ति पण्डिताः ॥ ५॥

Just as a big rock does not bow to the wind, so compliments or accusations do not bother the wise.
शैलो यथैकघनो वातेन न समीर्यते ।
एवं निन्दाप्रशंसासु न समीर्यन्ते पण्डिताः ॥ ६॥

Like a pond that is pure and peaceful and deep, so the soul of the sage responds to the words of the DHAMMA.
यथापि हृदो गंभीरो विप्रसन्नोऽनाविलः ।
एवं धर्मान् श्रुत्वा विप्रसीदन्ति पण्डिताः ॥ ७॥

Everything that the sage is attached to, they voluntarily let go. Good souls don't spend time talking endlessly about desires. When pain comes, when pleasure comes, the sage rises above it.
सर्वत्र वै सत्पुरुषा व्रजन्ति न कामकामा लपन्ति सन्तः ।
सुखेन स्पृष्टा अथवा दुःखेन नोच्चावचं पण्डिता दर्शयन्ति ॥ ८॥

They who do not strive for children to achieve wealth and accomplishment; they who never place their own success before the success of justice and virtue; they can be called wise.
नात्महेतोः न परस्य हेतोः न पुत्रमिच्छेन्न धनं न राष्ट्रम् ।
नेच्छेद् अधर्मेण समृद्धिमात्मनः स शीलवान् प्रज्ञावान् धार्मिकः स्यात् ॥ ९॥

Few are able to cross the river to the other shore and manage to reach NIRVANA. Most of them are constantly walking back and forth on the same side of the bank.
अल्पकास्ते मनुष्येषु ये जनाः पारगामिनः ।
अथेमा इतराः प्रजाः तीरमेवानुधावति ॥ १०॥

Those who follow the path as soon as they hear about it, they will reach the other side. They will travel beyond the realm of death.
ये च खलु सम्यगाख्याते धर्मे धर्मानुवर्त्तिनः ।
ते जना पारमेष्यन्ति मृत्युधेयं सुदुस्तरम् ॥ ११॥

Let the sage leave the familiar comforts, the personal cocoon, the home life, and step into a life of freedom. Stepped off the path of darkness and on the path to light.
कृष्णं धर्मं विप्रहाय शुक्लं भावयेत् पण्डितः ।
ओकात् अनोकं आगम्य विवेके यत्र दुरमम् ॥ १२॥

The sage finds in this solitude the greatest joy: free from possessions, free from desires, and free from whatever might darken the thoughts.
तत्राभिरतिमिच्छेत् हित्त्वा कामान् अकिञ्चनः ।
पर्यवदापयेत् आत्मानं चित्तक्लेशैः पण्डितः ॥ १३॥

For anyone who can train the mind to grow towards the light, who can put aside everything they are attached to and is self-satisfied, who shines with a pure brilliance by being completely free from the darkness of the passions, everyone can experience the infinite immortal within their lifetimes.
येषां संबोध्यंगेषु सम्यग्चित्तं सुभावितम् ।
आदानप्रतिनिःसर्गे अनुपादाय ये रताः ।
क्षीणास्रवा ज्योतिष्मन्तस्ते लोके परिनिर्वृताः ॥ १४॥
