१०. दण्डवर्गः दशमः
☸️
Everything shivers and trembles in the face of danger, everything and everyone is afraid of death. Whoever understands this does not kill and does not lead anyone to death.
सर्वे त्रस्यन्ति दण्डात् सर्वे बिभ्यति मृत्योः ।
आत्मानं उपमां कृत्वा न हन्यात् न घातयेत् ॥ १॥

Everything and everyone is afraid of danger, life is dear to everyone. Whoever thinks of this does not kill and does not lead anyone to death.
सर्वे त्रसयन्ति दण्डात् सर्वेषां जिवितं प्रियम् ।
आत्मानं उपमां कृत्वा न हन्यात् न घातयेत् ॥ २॥

Someone who finds happiness in tormenting others who also seek happiness will not find happiness afterwards.
सुखकामानि भूतानि यो दण्डेन विहिनस्ति ।
आत्मनः सुखमन्विष्य प्रेत्त्य स न लभते सुखम् ॥ ३॥

Someone who seeks happiness without hurting people who also seek happiness will find happiness afterwards.
सुखकामानि भूतानि यो दण्डेन न हिनसति ।
आत्मनः सुखमन्विष्य प्रेत्त्य स लभते सुखम् ॥ ४॥

Don't be blunt, because words return. Angry words are painful and the ball will be bounced back.
मा वोचः परुषं किञ्चिद् उक्ताः प्रतिवदेयुस्त्वाम् ।
दुःखा हि संरंभकथा प्रतिदण्डाः स्पृशेयुस्त्वाम् ॥ ५॥

If, like a broken gong, you can remain in quiet silence, then you have the peace of NIRVANA in you and your anger is automatically reassured.
स चेत् नेरयसि आत्मानं कांस्यमुपहतं यथा ।
एष प्राप्तोऽसि निर्वाणं संरंभस्ते न विद्यते ॥ ६॥

Just as a cowherd chases the cows into the fields, old age and death drive all living things deeper and further into the fields of death.
यथा दण्डेन गोपालो गाः प्राजयति गोचरम् ।
एवं जरा च मृत्युश्चायुः प्राजयतः प्राणिनाम् ॥ ७॥

When a fool is concerned with wickedness, it is often forgotten that they are lighting a fire that one day they will have to stand in themselves.
अथ पापानि कर्माणि कुर्वन् बालो न बुध्यते ।
स्वैः कर्मभिः दुर्मेधा अग्निदग्ध इव तप्यते ॥ ८॥

If you take up arms against someone who is harmless and pure, and also attack this person, then you will fall into one of these ten types of evil:
यो दण्डेनाऽदण्डेषु अप्रदुष्टेषु दुष्यति ।
दशानामन्यतमं स्थानं क्षिप्रमेव निगच्छति ॥ ९॥

Fearful pain or physical weakness, loss of limbs or a terrible illness, life without reason, insanity, persecution by government agencies, terrible charges.
वेदनां परुषां ज्यानिं शरीरस्य च भेदनम् ।
गुरुकं वाऽप्याबाधं चित्तक्षेपं वा प्राप्नुयात् ॥ १०॥

And also losing all possessions, losing all relationships, unexpected celestial bodies collapsing on your house.
राजतो वोपसर्गं अभ्याख्यानं वा दारुणम् ।
परिक्षयं वा ज्ञातीनां भोगानां वा प्रभञ्जनम् ॥ ११॥

And then when the fool sees the end of this life, he or she is reborn into a hellscape.
अथवाऽस्यागाराणि अग्निर्दहति पावकः ।
कायस्य भेदात् दुष्प्रज्ञो निरयं स उपपद्यते ॥ १२॥

No nudity, no amount of washing; no number of days spent fasting, no amount of lacquer on a bedframe, not even covering your body in ashes, nor endless squatting, nothing can purify a person who isn’t free of doubts and desires.
न नग्नचर्या न जटा न पङ्कां नाऽनशनं स्थण्डिलशायिका वा ।
रजोजलीयं उत्कुटिकाप्रधानं शोधयन्ति मर्त्त्यं अवितीर्णकांक्षम् ॥ १३॥

And even if someone is dressed in the most refined garments; but in doing so lives in peace and tranquility, is good in nature, relies completely on themselves in all areas, has confidence, is pure and torments no other living being, then this man is a holy Brahmin, a lonely hermit, a monk whom we call a Bhikshu.
अलङ्कृतश्चेदपि शमं चरेत् शान्तो दान्तो नियतो ब्रह्मचारी ।
सर्वेषु भूतेषु निधाय दण्डं स ब्राह्मणः स श्रमणः स भिक्षुः ॥ १४॥

Is there anyone on the planet who is so noble that they always avoid all accusations, just as a fancy horse dodges the whiplash?
ह्रीनिषेधः पुरुषः कश्चित् लोके विद्यते ।
यो निन्दां न प्रबुध्यति अश्वो भद्रः कशामिव ॥ १५॥

Let the fire in you ignite as if you were a horse whipped. The fire of trust, of virtue and energy, of deep understanding and insight, of wisdom and wise deeds, and overcome the sorrows of life.
अश्वो यथा भद्रः कशानिविष्ट आतापिनः संवेगिनो भवत ।
श्रद्धया शीलेन च वीर्येण च समाधिना धर्मविनिश्चयेन च ।
सम्पन्नविद्याचरणाः प्रतिस्मृताः प्रहास्यथ दुःखमिदं अनल्पकम् ॥ १६॥

Those who dig canals control the water; the creator of arrows straightens the arrows themselves; carpenters work the wood to their hand. The wise control their souls.
उदकं हि नयन्ति नेतृकाः इषुकारा नमयन्ति तेजनम् ।
दारुं नमयन्ति तक्षका आत्मानं दमयन्ति सुव्रताः ॥ १७॥
