N°24: Thirst
२४. तृष्णावर्गः चतुर्विंशः
☸️
The most compelling desires of people who live without conscious thoughts grow thicker and thicker like ivy. They jump like a monkey from one life to another, always looking for another piece of fruit in the forest.
मनुजस्य प्रमत्तचारिणः तृष्णा वर्द्धते मालुवेव ।
स प्लवतेऽहरहः फलमिच्छन् इव वने वानरः ॥ १॥

When we allow ourselves to be forced by these desires, sadness spreads just like wildgrass.
यं एषा साहयति जन्मिनी तृष्णा लोके विषात्मिका ।
शोकास्तस्य प्रवर्द्धन्तेऽभिवर्द्धमानं वीरणम् ॥ २॥

Conquer these ferocious cravings and sadness will fall away from your life just as drops of water fall from a petal.
यश्चैतां साहयति जन्मिनीं तृष्णां लोके दुरत्ययाम् ।
शोकाः तस्मात् प्रपतन्त्युदबिन्दुरिव पुष्करात् ॥ ३॥

That's why I say, dig out the roots of the cravings completely, just like you would pull out grass. So avoid MARA crushing you like reeds on the banks of a wild river.
तद् वो वदामि भद्रं वो यावन्त इह समागताः ।
तृष्णाया मूलं खनतोशीरार्थीव वीरणम् ॥ ४॥

Just as a tree continues to grow when it has been cut down but its roots have not been dug out, so suffering will still come to you with more and more compelling desires and compulsions until they are completely extinguished.
यथाऽपि मूलेऽनुपद्रवे दृढे छिन्नोऽपि वृक्षः पुनरेव रोहति ।
एवमपि तृष्णाऽनुशयेऽनिहते निर्वर्त्तते दुःखमिदं पुनः पुनः ॥ ५॥

If the thirty-six streams of the mind go to any kind of pleasure, there will be a flood that will wash away this unhappy person.
यस्य षट्त्रिंशत् स्रोतांसि मनापश्रवणानि भूयासुः ।
वाहा वहन्ति दुर्दृष्टि सङ्कल्पा रागनिःसृताः ॥ ६॥

The flood is coming everywhere. The ivy of passion grows everywhere. If you see one growing in your mind, uproot it with wisdom.
स्रवन्ति सर्वतः स्रोतांसि लतोद्भिद्य तिष्ठति ।
तां च दृष्ट्वा लतां जातां मूलं प्रज्ञया छिन्दत ॥ ७॥

Every human being undergoes the challenges of being attached to things and thirsting for pleasure. Continuing to crave these things keeps them stuck in the cycle of birth and death.
सरितः स्निग्द्धाश्च सौमनस्या भवन्ति जन्तोः
ते स्रोतःसृताः सुखैषिणस्ते वै जातिजरोपगा नराः ॥ ८॥

Chased around by thirst, they run around like a frightened hare, harder and harder and hardening.
तृष्णया पुरस्कृताः प्रजाः परिसर्पन्ति शश इव बद्धः ।
संयोजनसंगसक्तका दुःखमुपयन्ति पुनः पुनः चिराय ॥ ९॥

Chased around by this thirst, they run around like frightened hares. Overcome thirst and free yourself.
तृष्णया पुरस्कृताः प्रजाः परिसर्पन्ति शश इव बद्धः ।
तस्मात् तृष्णां विनोदयेद् भिक्षुराकाङ्क्षी विरागमात्मानः ॥ १०॥

Some free themselves from a forest of desires and immediately step into another. Freed from one, they run straight into the chains of another.
यो निर्वणार्थी वनाऽधिमुक्तो वनमुक्तो वनमेव धावति ।
तुं पुद्गलमेव पश्यत मुक्तो बन्धनमेव धावति ॥ ११॥

Even handcuffs made of wood, rope or even iron, the sages say, are not as strong as the selfish obsession with wealth and family.
न तद् दृढं बन्धनमाहुर्धीरा यद् आयसं दारुजं पर्वजं च ।
सारवद्-रक्ता मणिकुण्डलेषु पुत्रेषु दारेषु च याऽपेक्षा ॥ १२॥

Such shackles hold us and are difficult to break. Break away from them by overcoming selfish desires and turn your back to the world of all kinds of sensory pleasures alone without ever looking back.
एतद् दृढं बन्धनमाहुर्धीरा अपहारि शिथिलं दुष्प्रमोचम् ।
एतदपि छित्त्वा परिव्रजन्ति अनपेक्षिणः कामसुखं प्रहाय ॥ १३॥

Like a spider trapped in their own web, a human being is trapped in the web of its own ferocious cravings. Break away from the web and turn your back to sensory pleasure and all sadness.
ये रागरक्ता अनुपतन्ति स्रोतः स्वयंकृतं मर्कटक इव जालम् ।
एतदपि छित्त्वा व्रजन्ति धीरा अनपेक्षिणः सर्वदुःखं प्रहाय ॥ १४॥

If you want to reach the other shore of existence, give up everything you had before and leave it in the middle. Free your mind and transcend birth and death.
मुञ्च पुरो मुञ्च पश्चात् मध्ये मुञ्च भवस्य पारगः ।
सर्वत्र विमुक्तमानसो न पुनः जातिजरे उपैपि ॥ १५॥

If you want to reach the other bank, don't let any doubts, passions and cravings strengthen your handcuffs.
वितर्कप्रमथितस्य जन्तोः तीव्ररागस्य शुभाऽनुदर्शिनः ।
भूयः तृष्णा प्रवर्द्धते एष खलु दृढं करोति बन्धनम् ॥ १६॥

Meditate deeply, distinguish between pleasurable things and the permanent, break free from the shackles of MARA.
वितर्कोपशमे च यो रतोऽशुभं भावयते सदा स्मॄतः ।
एष खलु व्यन्तीकरिष्यति एष छेत्स्यति मारबन्धनम् ॥ १७॥

Those who are free from fear, thirst, and sin have taken all the thorns out of their lives. The body they have will be their last.
निष्ठांगतोऽसंत्रासी वीततृष्णोऽनंगणः ।
उत्सृज्य भवशल्यानि अन्तिमोऽयं समुछ्रयः ॥ १८॥

Those who are free from compulsive habits and attachments and understand what words actually stand for are of supreme wisdom. This body will be their last.
वीततृष्णोऽनादानो निरुक्तिपदकोविदो ।
अक्षराणां सन्निपातं जानाति पूर्वापराणि च ।
स वै अन्तिमशारीरो महाप्राज्ञ इत्युच्यते॥ १९॥

I have overcome myself and live in purity. I already know it. I have left everything behind and live in freedom. I taught myself, who can claim to be my teacher?
सर्वाभिभूः सर्वविदहमस्मि सर्वेषु धर्मेषु अनुपलिप्तः
।सर्वंजहः तृष्णाक्षये विमुक्तः स्वयमभिप्राय कमुद्दिशेयम् ॥ २०॥

There is no greater gift than the gift of the DHARMA. There is no sweeter, no happier gift. It puts an end to all the cravings and sorrow they bring.
सर्वदानं धर्मदानं जयति सर्वरसं धर्मरसो जयति ।
सर्वां रतिं धर्मरतिर्जयति तृष्णाक्षयः सर्वदुःखं जयति ॥ २१॥

Wealth is harmful to the stingy person, but not to those who seek NIRVANA. With their limited insight, the greedy harm themselves and everyone around them.
घ्नन्ति भोग दुर्मेधसं न चेत् पारगवेषिणः ।
भोगतृष्णया दुर्मेधा हन्त्यन्य इवात्मानः ॥ २२॥

Greediness ruins the mind just as weeds ruin the fields. Therefore, admire anyone who does not know an ounce of greediness.
तृणदोषाणि क्षेत्राणि रागदोषेयं प्रजा ।
तस्माद्धि वीतरागेषु दत्तं भवति महाफलम् ॥ २३॥

Lust ruins the mind just as weeds ruin the fields. Therefore, admire anyone who does not know an ounce of lust.
तृणदोषाणि क्षेत्राणि द्वेषदोषेयं प्रजा ।
तस्माद्धि वीतदोषेषु दत्तं भवति महाफलम् ॥ २४॥
☸️
Hatred ruins the mind just as weeds ruin the fields. Therefore, admire anyone who does not know an ounce of hate.
तृणदोषाणि क्षेत्राणि मोहदोषेयं प्रजा ।
तस्माद्धि वीतमोहेषु दत्तं भवति महाफलम् ॥ २५॥

All desires for your own self ruin your mind just as weeds ruin the fields. Therefore, admire everyone who is free of selfish desires.
तृणदोषाणि क्षेत्राणि इच्छादोषेयं प्रजा ।
तस्माद्धि विगतेच्छेषु दत्तं भवति महाफलम् ॥ २६॥
