N°22: Downward
२२. निरयवर्गो द्वाविंशः
☸️
Someone who says things that are not true, and someone who denies what they have done, both choose a downward path.
After death, these two are partners in falsehood.
अभूतवादी निरयमुपेति यो वाऽपि कृत्वा न करोमि ति चाह ।
उभावपि तौ प्रेत्त्य समा भवतो निहीनकर्माणौः मनुजौः परत्र ॥ १॥

Those who put on an orange cloak but are not well-behaved, and go through life undisciplined, they will be swept away by their evil deeds.
काषायकण्ठा बहवः पापधर्मा असंयताः ।
पापाः पापैः कर्मभिर्निरयं ते उत्पद्यन्ते ॥ २॥

It would be better for an undisciplined monk to swallow a red-hot iron ball than to continue to dwell on the generosity of the pious.
श्रेयान् अयोगोलो भुक्तस्तप्तोऽग्निशिखोपम ।
यच्चेद् भुञ्जीत दुःशीलो राष्ट्रपिंडं असंयतः ॥ ३॥

Cheating leads to the loss of merit, insomnia, condemnation and makes suffering greater.
चत्वारि स्थानानि नरः प्रमत्तः आपद्यते परदारोपसेवी ।
अपुण्यलाभं न निकामशय्यां निन्दां तृतीयां निरयं चतुर्थम् ॥ ४॥

On this downward path, what pleasure can there still be for the fearful who lie in the arms of other fearful, while both are consumed by fear of being punished. Therefore, never cheat.
अपुण्यलाभश्च गतिश्च पापिका भीतस्य भीतया रतिश्च स्तोकिका ।
राजा च दण्डं गुरुकं प्रणयति तस्मात् नरो परदारान् न सेवेत् ॥ ५॥

A blade of grass can cut your finger if you hold it incorrectly. In the same way, excessive fasting without the right mental attitude can still lead to the downward path.
कुशो यथा दुर्गृहीतो हस्तमेवाऽनुकृन्तति ।
श्रामण्यं दुष्परामृष्टं निरयायोपकर्षति ॥ ६॥

An act that is done carelessly or thoughtlessly, a promise that has not been kept, vows of chastity that have not been kept: these deeds, promises and vows do not yield much.
यत् किञ्चित् शिथिलं कर्म संक्लिष्टं च यद् व्रतम्
।संकृच्छ्रं ब्रह्मचर्यं न तद् भवति महत्फलम् ॥ ७॥

If there is something worth doing, do it with all your heart. A half-hearted hunger striker only covers himself in more and more dust.
कुर्याच्चेत् कुर्वीतैतद् दृढमेतत् पराक्रमेत ।
शिथिलो हि परिव्राजको भूय आकिरते रजः ॥ ८॥

Keep yourself from evil deeds, which later cause suffering. Commit yourself to good deeds, they cannot cause suffering.
अकृतं दुष्कृतं श्रेयः पश्चात् तपति दुष्कृतम् ।
कृतं च सुकृतं श्रेयो यत् कृत्वा नाऽनुतप्यते ॥ ९॥

Protect yourself well, inside and out just like a fortified fortress. Don't waste a moment, because wasted time also sends you down the down path.
नगरं यथा प्रत्यन्तं गुप्तं सान्तर्बाह्यं
एवं गोपयेदात्मानं क्षणं वै मा उपातिगाः ।
क्षणाऽतीता हि शोचन्ति निरये समर्पिताः ॥ १०॥

Those who are ashamed of things they should not be ashamed of, and not ashamed of things they should certainly be ashamed of, follow the wrong principles in a downward path.
अलज्जिता ये लज्जन्ते लज्जित ये न लज्जन्ते ।
मिथ्यादृष्टि समादाना सत्त्वा गच्छन्ति दुर्गतिम् ॥ ११॥

Those who are afraid of things they should not be afraid of, and are not afraid of the things they should be afraid of, follow the wrong principles of the downward path.
अभये च भयदर्शिनो भये चाऽभयदर्शिनः ।
मिथ्यादृष्टिसमादानाः सत्त्वा गच्छन्ति दुर्गतिम् ॥ १२॥

Those who see bad things in things that are not bad, and do not see bad things in things that are bad, follow the wrong principles of the downward path.
अवद्ये वद्यमतयो वद्ये चाऽवद्यदर्शिनः ।
मिथ्यादृष्टिसमादानाः सत्त्वा गच्छन्ति दुर्गतिम् ॥ १३॥

But those who see bad things where there are bad things, and do not see bad things in things that are not bad, follow the right principles on the climbing path.
वद्यं च वद्यतो ज्ञात्वाऽवद्यं चावद्यतः ।
सम्यग्दृष्टिसमादानाः सत्त्वा गच्छन्ति सुगतिम् ॥ १४॥
